Lunar laser ranging in infrfared at hte Grasse laser station
For many years, lunar laser ranging (LLR) observations using a green
wavelength have suffered an inhomogeneity problem both temporally and
spatially. This paper reports on the implementation of a new infrared detection
at the Grasse LLR station and describes how infrared telemetry improves this
situation. Our first results show that infrared detection permits us to densify
the observations and allows measurements during the new and the full Moon
periods. The link budget improvement leads to homogeneous telemetric
measurements on each lunar retro-reflector. Finally, a surprising result is
obtained on the Lunokhod 2 array which attains the same efficiency as Lunokhod
1 with an infrared laser link, although those two targets exhibit a
differential efficiency of six with a green laser link
Tadpole-improved SU(2) lattice gauge theory
A comprehensive analysis of tadpole-improved SU(2) lattice gauge theory is
made. Simulations are done on isotropic and anisotropic lattices, with and
without improvement. Two tadpole renormalization schemes are employed, one
using average plaquettes, the other using mean links in Landau gauge.
Simulations are done with spatial lattice spacings in the range of about
0.1--0.4 fm. Results are presented for the static quark potential, the
renormalized lattice anisotropy (where is the ``temporal''
lattice spacing), and for the scalar and tensor glueball masses. Tadpole
improvement significantly reduces discretization errors in the static quark
potential and in the scalar glueball mass, and results in very little
renormalization of the bare anisotropy that is input to the action. We also
find that tadpole improvement using mean links in Landau gauge results in
smaller discretization errors in the scalar glueball mass (as well as in the
static quark potential), compared to when average plaquettes are used. The
possibility is also raised that further improvement in the scalar glueball mass
may result when the coefficients of the operators which correct for
discretization errors in the action are computed beyond tree level.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures (minor changes to overall scales in Fig.1; typos

Observation of Sommerfeld precursors on a fluid surface
We report the observation of two types of Sommerfeld precursors (or
forerunners) on the surface of a layer of mercury. When the fluid depth
increases, we observe a transition between these two precursor surface waves in
good agreement with the predictions of asymptotic analysis. At depths thin
enough compared to the capillary length, high frequency precursors propagate
ahead of the ''main signal'' and their period and amplitude, measured at a
fixed point, increase in time. For larger depths, low frequency ''precursors''
follow the main signal with decreasing period and amplitude. These behaviors
are understood in the framework of the analysis first introduced for linear
transient electromagnetic waves in a dielectric medium by Sommerfeld and
Brillouin [1].Comment: to be published in Physical Review Letter
Hadron Properties with FLIC Fermions
The Fat-Link Irrelevant Clover (FLIC) fermion action provides a new form of
nonperturbative O(a)-improvement in lattice fermion actions offering near
continuum results at finite lattice spacing. It provides computationally
inexpensive access to the light quark mass regime of QCD where chiral
nonanalytic behaviour associated with Goldstone bosons is revealed. The
motivation and formulation of FLIC fermions, its excellent scaling properties

First-passage and first-exit times of a Bessel-like stochastic process
We study a stochastic process related to the Bessel and the Rayleigh
processes, with various applications in physics, chemistry, biology, economics,
finance and other fields. The stochastic differential equation is , where is the Wiener process. Due to the
singularity of the drift term for , different natures of boundary at
the origin arise depending on the real parameter : entrance, exit, and
regular. For each of them we calculate analytically and numerically the
probability density functions of first-passage times or first-exit times.
Nontrivial behaviour is observed in the case of a regular boundary.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Physical Review
Quenched QCD with O(a) improvement: I. The spectrum of light hadrons
We present a comprehensive study of the masses of pseudoscalar and vector
mesons, as well as octet and decuplet baryons computed in O(a) improved
quenched lattice QCD. Results have been obtained using the non-perturbative
definition of the improvement coefficient c_sw, and also its estimate in
tadpole improved perturbation theory. We investigate effects of improvement on
the incidence of exceptional configurations, mass splittings and the parameter
J. By combining the results obtained using non-perturbative and tadpole
improvement in a simultaneous continuum extrapolation we can compare our
spectral data to experiment. We confirm earlier findings by the CP-PACS
Collaboration that the quenched light hadron spectrum agrees with experiment at

Lowest-lying Tetra-Quark Hadrons in Anisotropic Lattice QCD
We present a detailed study of lowest-lying hadrons in
quenched improved anisotropic lattice QCD. Using the and
diquark-antidiquark local and smeared operators, we attempt to isolate the
signal for and states in two flavour
QCD. In the chiral limit of light-quark mass region, the lowest scalar
state is found to have a mass, MeV, which is slightly
lower than the experimentally observed . The results from our
variational analysis do not indicate a signature of a tetraquark resonance in
I=1 and I=2 channels. After the chiral extrapolation the lowest
state is found to have a mass, MeV. We analysed the
static potential extracted form a tetraquark Wilson loop and illustrated
the behaviour of the state as a bound state, unbinding at some critical
diquark separation. From our analysis we conclude that scalar system
appears as a two-pion scattering state and that there is no spatially-localised
state in the light-quark mass region.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure

Effects of non-perturbatively improved dynamical fermions in QCD at fixed lattice spacing
We present results for the static inter-quark potential, lightest glueballs,
light hadron spectrum and topological susceptibility using a non-perturbatively
improved action on a lattice at a set of values of the bare
gauge coupling and bare dynamical quark mass chosen to keep the lattice size
fixed in physical units ( fm). By comparing these measurements with a
matched quenched ensemble, we study the effects due to two degenerate flavours
of dynamical quarks. With the greater control over residual lattice spacing
effects which these methods afford, we find some evidence of charge screening
and some minor effects on the light hadron spectrum over the range of quark
masses studied (). More substantial differences between
quenched and unquenched simulations are observed in measurements of topological

Ab Initio Calculation of Relativistic Corrections to the Static Interquark potential I: SU(2) Gauge Theory
We test the capability of state-of-the-art lattice techniques for a precise
determination of relativistic corrections to the static interquark potential,
by use of SU(2) gauge theory. Emphasis is put on the short range structure of
the spin dependent potentials, with lattice resolution a ranging from a approx
0.04 fm (at beta=2.74) down to a approx 0.02 fm (at beta=2.96) on volumes of
32^4 and 48^4 lattice sites. We find a new short range Coulomb-like
